The up-cycling or adaptive reuse of shipping containers as a building material has grown in popularity over the past several years due to their inherent strength, wide availability and relatively low expense. Permanent and mobile homes, hotels, art galleries, apartment buildings, student housing, office buildings, shopping malls, workshops, retail stores, children’s activity centres, restaurants, sports halls, bars, coffee shops, banks and post offices have been built with containers because they are also more eco-friendly than traditional building materials such as brick and cement.

FedEx and DHL use pop-up shipping centres. They can be picked up and dropped off just about anywhere. These containers are especially helpful when a store was destroyed by a natural disaster or fire. The container is placed nearby and can do everything that the brick and mortar is capable of during the rebuild.

Postal administrations also use these pop-up post offices to replace a post office that has been destroyed in a natural disaster  in order to provide continuing postal services to the population. We have seen these in Nigeria (Lekki Post Office, Lagos), Scotland (Coldingham), New Zealand (Christchurch), Haiti (Jacmel), Tanzania (Moshi), Kenya (Buru-buru) and other countries.

Jamaica Mobile Post Office Van

Many Posts use mobile van post offices (Japan, India, Singapore, Mauritius, Jamaica, Malta, Korea, Hong Kong, USPS, etc.) that they drive to under serviced locations, special events or to a location that needs a temporary post office. Even the Vatican Post in Rome has a mobile van post office.

Even if a pop-up, container post office is not required at this time, it may be advisable to have an architectural design ready for a later time or a container post office could be constructed, stored and ready for a catastrophe anywhere in the country.

The container post office could be built in country or a Post could have it constructed in China and shipped back.  The Yingkou Haitian Colored Steel Sheet Equipment Company builds such  structures.

The benefits of shipping container buildings are very clear.

A number of banks are using shipping container buildings as effective, strongly branded, low-cost temporary banks, mobile banks as well as permanent locations.

Posts should do the same. Particularly those at risk of natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornados, cyclones or typhoons.
